3 Key Takeaways From This Article:

  • Crop consultant Tyler Bailey says choosing a fungicide with preventative and curative properties is the best way to control wheat diseases.
  • Bailey says yield will be better if wheat plants don’t have to spend energy and nutrients fighting off disease.
  • Bailey recommends his customers us Aproach® Prima fungicide.

As a crop consultant, Tyler Bailey knows that a healthier wheat crop equals a better bottom line. He also believes controlling tough diseases, such as stripe rust, is simpler when you choose a fungicide with both preventive and curative properties.

“If the plant is spending energy fighting off a disease, yield will go down,” says Bailey, a crop consultant for Nutrien Ag Solutions in Connell, Washington. “By applying Aproach Prima preventively, we’re letting the plant use its energy to put more kernels in the head while letting Aproach Prima fight the disease and prevent the disease from negatively affecting the wheat plant.”

With two modes of action and two active ingredients — picoxystrobin and cyproconazole — Aproach® Prima fungicide gives farmers the flexibility to treat wheat before disease develops or after plants have been infected. The plant absorbs the fungicide almost twice as fast as competing fungicides, as it surrounds and penetrates each leaf and stem. From the soil surface to the newly emerged, leaves and stems are protected.

Bailey prefers taking action before disease infects wheat, and that is the approach he recommends to his farmer-customers. It is important, he says, to act before disease has slashed yield potential.

In addition to the preventive and curative properties offered by Aproach Prima, Bailey values the fungicide for the long-lasting residual activity, cost-effectiveness and yield bump he sees long after application. It all adds up to a stronger, healthier crop with higher potential yield and the promise of an improved bottom line at harvest.

“Even if you don’t get hit with disease, Aproach Prima is still going to pay for itself with the yield increase you get, which will more than pay for a fungicide application,” he says. “When it comes to the bang for your buck, it’s the best fungicide product out there.”

Bailey says the residual activity provided by the active ingredients in Aproach Prima buys his wheat-producing customers up to 35 days of disease protection postapplication, at a cost-effective rate. “That is a big deal for us. Thirty-five days may get a farmer through to where he doesn’t have to do a second spraying,” he says.

“Aproach Prima is worth it from the standpoint that the yield increase is going to give you something no other chemistry combination is going to give you,” he adds. “It’s a way to put more bushels and more dollars in a farmer’s pocket.”
