Three factors can make spring more challenging for weed control First, wet harvests can prevent fall herbicide applications. Next, certain winter conditions are conducive to spring weed growth in many areas. Finally, prevent plant acres can leave many fields especially vulnerable to weed pressure.
Remind farmers of the importance of using strong residual herbicides. Without them, herbicide-resistant weeds like waterhemp and Palmer amaranth will likely flourish — choking fields of sunlight, moisture and nutrients and resulting in the potential for reduced yield at harvest.
The best plan of attack is recommending powerful residual herbicides as part of a program approach to weed control — starting clean with a burndown application and then following with effective preemergence and postemergence herbicides.
