Corn planting is starting in earnest across the Midwest. Here's a high-level overview of the planting outlook in Indiana and some crop protection reminders from Nate Wyss, Market Development Specialist for Corteva Agriscience.
Depending on the weather in your area, you may have already gotten your corn in the ground or you may be planning to do so in the very near future. Regardless of where you are in the process, now is a great time to review your crop protection plans for the year. Making sure to follow those plans can help you optimize your corn yield potential this season.
You know how important it is to scout your corn for weeds, diseases and pests, but it doesn’t hurt to get a few reminders so nothing slips through the cracks as the season ramps up.
It’s especially important to scout for weeds following preemergence herbicide applications. If you find weed escapes, you can reevaluate your postemergence herbicide plans and adjust them accordingly. You can consider changing your postemergence chemistries to control any weeds you find.
When it comes to nitrogen applications, there are a lot of important considerations to make this year. Fertilizer prices have risen sharply, with UAN, for example, nearly doubling in price since the start of 2021. In addition, dry and even drought conditions may have you considering split applications this spring.
So, protecting your investment with a nitrogen stabilizer will be imperative. N-Serve® nitrogen stabilizer can be applied with anhydrous ammonia and Instinct NXTGEN® nitrogen stabilizer can be used with UAN and urea. Both products extend nitrogen availability by up to 8 weeks to maximize corn yield potential.
It also never hurts to start scouting for diseases and insects early and often. It’s a good idea to plan to proactively use a fungicide, such as Aproach® or Aproach® Prima fungicide. If you need an insecticide to protect your corn, a product such as Lorsban® Advanced insecticide is a good choice.
