Continuous wheat production in the southern Plains may result in heavier infestations of winter annual grass weeds, including wild oat.
Wild oat plants spread horizontally along the ground with the stems, or apex, curving skyward. In states like Oklahoma and Texas, wild oat lacks seed dormancy, germinating through the fall and winter months.
“Rezuvant is the cure for wild oat and other weeds that we fight through in grain production, including marestail and henbit,” says retailer Mark Smith with Humphreys Co-op in Altus, Oklahoma.
Smith participated in on-farm trials this year, comparing Rezuvant® herbicide with a competing herbicide tank mix. The continuous winter wheat field received the weed control treatment in mid-March, targeting wild oat and other broadleaf weeds.
“Rezuvant did a really good job controlling wild oat, and it cleaned up the broadleaf weeds we were going after, including henbit, mustard and marestail,” Smith says.

On half the field, Smith’s grower sprayed a tank mix containing 16.4 ounces per acre of Rezuvant herbicide plus 1 pint per acre of MCPA ester and 32-0-0 liquid fertilizer. The competing treatment, sprayed on the other half of the field, included 15 ounces per acre of Axial Bold herbicide plus 1 pint per acre of MCPA ester and 32-0-0 liquid fertilizer. Both treatments used a spray volume of 15 gallons per acre.
“The fields treated with Rezuvant were clean. Rezuvant performed a lot better on broadleaf weeds than our side-by-side comparison treatment,” Smith says. “We had quite a bit of henbit, and Rezuvant did a really good job on the henbit, whereas the MCPA didn’t do a great job.”
Another advantage of Rezuvant, Smith says, is the tank-mix flexibility it offers.
“In our 2021 field trials, we mixed Rezuvant with liquid fertilizer. We ran 30 pounds of nitrogen with the Rezuvant and our other crop protection products, and we didn’t have any problem mixing it with fertilizer,” Smith says. “There were no tank-mix issues, and Rezuvant was easy to handle.”
Smith adds: “We like that Rezuvant is a one-jug, one-mixed deal; is comparable cost-wise to competing products; and is easy to use. It is easier than handling and mixing multiple products together.”
